Behind the scenes at Rett's Roost is a team of cosmic proportions. We have unbelievable support flying in from all directions. The following beautiful people have helped bring it all together so far.
Running the Roost
Everett Cavan CHIEF OPERATING OWL
Everett Thomas Cavan (aka, Rett) was born to this world at sunrise on April 27th, 2014; a little owl spirit in the form of a perfect baby boy. Despite his sickness, Everett exuded an infectious personality. People felt love just looking into his intense blue eyes, which showed life in a new light. He chose his mom and dad to carry out his mission, to use the fund that grew to great proportions while he was sick to open a retreat center for children with cancer—somewhere far from hospital rooms, radiation, and chemo; somewhere beautiful and serene. Just once around the sun for this baby’s old soul; that’s all he needed to make his imprint on the world.
Deana Cavan Co-Founder & Executive Director
Being a mother changed Deana forever. She always considered herself a caregiver, first to the earth in her environmental studies in college, and then to her student’s as a dedicated yoga teacher. But when she first held Rett in her arms and continued to nurture him through his unyielding battle with cancer, she realized her life’s true calling. Rett’s Roost has become an outlet for her grief of losing her precious boy. She hopes that with her Type A organizational skills, drive to do good, and deep compassion for families like hers, she will create something powerful and substantial in honor of her son.
Jim Cavan Co-Founder & Chair of the Board
Jim was long convinced he would never be more proud than he was the day his baby boy arrived. But through Everett’s brave four-month battle with cancer, his dad’s pride, like the many tears, only swelled. And while the pain of losing his firstborn will never fully subside, Jim finds strength in knowing Rett’s Roost has a truly special spirit watching over it. Expect to see Jim doing a little bit of everything around the Roost: wrangling the Board of Directors, writing extraordinary stories of strength, conjuring up various family adventures, and cooking the best breakfasts this side of mom’s kitchen—a laughing, loving little owl on his shoulder all the while.
Susanne Shaw Treasurer
As the owner of K9 Etiquette, Susanne has been transforming dogs’ lives since 2006 by educating owners about their dog’s mental, physical, and nutritional needs. In 2013 she focused on her own health after years of sciatica pain and inappropriate diet and realized she couldn’t help but share all she was learning and opened up a second business as an independent health coach. Rett’s battle with cancer reinforced the importance of both mental and physical health for Susanne. He gave her a whole new understanding of what is of real value in life: health, love, friendship, community, and family, and she is excited and honored to be able to be part of Rett’s Roost.
Tracy Jordan Secretary
Tracy has worked at Boston Children’s Hospital Trust (the philanthropic arm of Boston Children’s Hospital) since 2004. She began her nonprofit career on the Corporate and Foundation Relations team; she then spent five years as a Development Writer, a position for which her Bachelor of Arts degree in English prepared her well. In 2012, Tracy accepted the role of Patient Liaison. Through this role, she’s awed by the talent, compassion and dedication of the staff who surround her, and equally inspired by the strength, courage and generosity of the patients and families who so selflessly allow her to share in both their brightest and darkest moments. Families like the Cavan family. Tracy is honored and blessed to be part of Rett’s Roost now, an extraordinary organization whose mission is synergistic with her work at the hospital.
